Y5157 — School Yield To Pedestrians In-Street Sign, Portable Base
The School Yield To Pedestrians In-Street Sign is MUTCD compliant for the safety standards of drivers and pedestrians on roadways and parking areas, and is a helpful tool to help enforce traffic regulation at school and campus crossings. The complete assembly pairs a fluorescent yellow-green double-sided STATE LAW YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS WITHIN CROSSWALK panel with a 36 lb portable base. Set in the roadway on the center line or a lane line, the sign puts the YIELD message directly in front of approaching drivers. The reactive spring returns the panel to vertical after impact, and the freestanding portable base lets crews reposition or pull the sign for events, winter plowing, or low-activity periods.
Specifications
Panel size: 12″ W x 47″ H, double-sided — the same legend appears on both faces so the sign reads to traffic from either direction.
Legend: STATE LAW YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS WITHIN CROSSWALK, black legend and border on a white background surrounded by a fluorescent yellow-green school-zone field (red STOP or YIELD symbol where used).
Sheeting: 12″ x 47″ Fluorescent Yellow-Green Diamond Grade reflective sheeting with a 10″ x 24″ White High Intensity reflective insert; the panel face is recessed to protect the sheeting from abrasions and scratches.
Construction: durable molded polyethylene panel supported on a high-impact plastic post.
Impact performance: reactive spring assembly tested at 200 lb tension with a stainless steel cable; the panel bends on vehicle impact and consistently returns to its original vertical position.
Handling: panel and base separate and stack for easy transport and storage.
Mounting height: installed, the top of the sign sits within the 4 ft in-street maximum above the pavement surface.
Base included: 36 lb portable rubber base (34″ x 14″ x 2″): freestanding, no anchoring required; repositions or removes for events, winter plowing, or low pedestrian-activity periods.
Pedestrian Crossing Panel Specifications
Size: 12" x 47" Fluorescent Yellow-Green Diamond Grade Reflective Sheeting. With 10 x 24" White High Intensity Reflective Sheeting Insert (white area where image and content is specified)
This Panel is Double Sided (2 signs, one on each side containing the same information and supported with a high impact plastic post). State Law Yield/Stop for Pedestrians Within Crosswalk Panels meet MUTCD Section 2B.12 In-Street Pedestrian Crossing Signs (R1-6, R1-6a)
Durable molded polyethylene panels and recycled rubber bases.
For transportation and storage, both the panels and base can be easily separated and stacked.
When impacted by a vehicle each panel reactive spring gives upon impact and is designed to consistently return the post or panel to its original position.
The panel face is recessed to minimize abrasions and scratches to the expensive reflective sheeting.
Panel Dimensions: 12" wide x 47" high (Double Sided)
Double Paneled Unit has a reactive spring assembly tested at 200 lb tension with stainless steel cable.
Base comes standard with quick release feature that allows upright installation and removal in less than 5 seconds.
Installation: each portable base is supplied with 4 bolts to secure each panel in place, place panel on top of the base (screws will be positioned inside the bigger holes), rotate panel about 15° and snap into place (screws will lock into place inside the smaller holes). No extra accessories or tools are required for this assembly.
The In-Street Pedestrian Crossing sign (R1-6 or R1-6a) may be used to remind road users of laws regarding right-of-way at an unsignalized pedestrian crosswalk. The legend STATE LAW may be displayed at the top of the sign where applicable, and the legends STOP or YIELD may be used in place of the STOP or YIELD symbol. Highway agencies may develop and apply criteria for determining where these signs are used. Placement (Standard): the sign shall be placed in the roadway at the crosswalk location on the center line, on a lane line, or on a median island, and shall not be post-mounted on the left- or right-hand side of the roadway. It shall not be placed in advance of the crosswalk or used as a stand-alone educational display away from a crosswalk. If an island is available, the sign should be placed on the island (Guidance). Use limits (Standard): the sign shall not be used at signalized locations. The STOP FOR legend shall only be used in states whose law specifically requires a driver to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Unless placed on a physical island, the sign support shall be designed to bend over and bounce back to its normal vertical position when struck by a vehicle. Mounting height (Standard): the top of an In-Street Pedestrian Crossing sign shall be a maximum of 4 feet above the pavement or island surface; the mounting-height provisions of Section 2A.18 do not apply. The sign may be used seasonally to prevent plow damage in winter and may be removed at night where nighttime pedestrian activity is minimal. In-Street Pedestrian Crossing signs may be used together with Overhead Pedestrian Crossing signs and Yield Here To (Stop Here For) Pedestrians signs at the same crosswalk.
